MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC WORKSHOP
The course would provide a unique opportunity for musicians to explore the relationship between Middle Eastern and Western music. Participants will bring their own melody instrument, which they already have a basic proficiency on and are able to learn simple melodies either by ear or from sheet music (provided). Arabic scales are introduced which do not use quarter notes but sound very “eastern” and melodies based on these scales will be learned. Improvisation is a very important element in Arabic music and participants are encouraged to explore their
improvisational abilities in a supportive structure. Arabic music forms and scales with quarter tones are introduced and demonstrated for participants to help in their appreciation of Arabic music.

INTRODUCTION TO KHALIJI ( Gulf ) RHYTHMS
This workshop is aimed at students who have already some experience of playing Middle Eastern drums and percussion. The rhythms used in the Khalij are often played together to create a very funky sounding polyrhythmic groove. Participants will play in small groups playing different cross rhythms to create the overall sound of the Khalij polyrhythm. Handclapping plays is a very important part and so students of all levels can be accommodated but the drumming parts will mostly go to players with some experience. All percussion provided.

Friday at 8pm – COUNTRY AND EASTERN
http://www.myspace.com/countryandeastern
The Country and Eastern Band. The unique Country and Eastern sound with its diverse eastern and western influences, relies on a careful balance of the familiar with the unknown. Following in the footsteps of British Bands Asian Dub Foundation and Transglobal Underground, their music layers the more unusual sounds of eastern instruments and words over the unmistakable beat of rock. They successfully fuse modern rearrangements of traditional Turkish and Kurdish pieces with original songs and poignant English lyrics.
