This course gives Western musicians the opportunity to study Turkish music from a Western perspective and to gain a good understanding about the Maqams system and theory and practice of Turkish Music.

Tuition for intermediate Ney students: Ney Taqasim – Improvisation and Modulation on the Turkish Ney.
Seminar about the History of Turkish & Middle Eastern Music.
Main Workshop Teachers:
Raheesha: Romany Gypsy Dance, Turkish Folkloric Dance and Egyptian Dance.
Raheesha has been teaching nationally and internationally for over 10 years and studied and has perform with top dancers all over the world. Her passion for dance grew while she was living in Morocco in the ’80s and evolved as she continued her studies in Turkey, Egypt and the UK. Raheesha has proved not only to be an entertaining dancer but popular instructor and has taught and performed at many dance festivals. She is the director of the popular Majma Dance Festival, one of the oldest Middle Eastern and world dance festivals in the UK.
Chas Whitaker: Darabuka / Duff / Riq / Segat.
Chas has been learning, performing and teaching Middle Eastern percussion for over 20 years. Predominantly self taught he has travelled extensively across Morocco, Egypt and Turkey where has taken instruction and inspiration from many of the best players. Renowned for his patient and clear instruction, he is very adept at teaching groups or individuals to suit their particular needs. He is a regular teacher at many of the UK’s premier music and dance festivals and summer schools such as Glastonbury, WOMAD, Drum Camp, MidEastFest, MAJMA etc. He plays in several ensembles including Mazaj and Souk Bab el Louk and has guested with many other artists e.g. Hossam Ramzy’s Orchestra.

Maren Lueg: Arabic & Turkish Ney Flute, Saxophone and Transfers Flute.
Maren started her musical education from an early age in Germany. Initially trained in Western music, she focused her studies on Jazz and Middle Eastern music. Maren passed her Masters in Near and Middle Eastern Music Performance in 2010 with Merit at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Over the last 7 years Maren has studied Turkish and Arabic Ney flute with international recognised Masters of Ney such as Wadie Nossier (Cairo/London), Mohammed Antar (Cairo), Dr.Kadry Sorour (Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt), Ömer Erdoğdular (Istanbul), Murat Ferhat Yeguel (Konya State Conservatuary), Çağin Aydin (Istanbul), Mutlu Yilmazer (Turkey).
She performs regularly with Western and Middle Eastern Music Ensembles national and internationally. In 2010 Maren joined the Royal Shakespeare Company Music Ensemble at Stratford Upon Avon for 3 months for their production of The Arabian Nights Theatre Show playing Ney, Zurna and Arabic Saxophone. She is a regular teacher at many specialist music festivals and summer schools presenting Introductions to Middle Eastern Music and also the Ney.

There are many activities available for guests, here a few to consider: WALKS – Spectacular local walks affording exquisite panoramic vistas of the Mediterranean coastline and the famous Lycian way right on your doorstep. Paths are well marked and maintained and local guides with local knowledge of the flora and fauna are available to hire. BEACHES – N.B. these beaches are approximately 20 minutes away from the Lazy Lizard, by Dolmus ( local minibus transport ). Kidrak – also known as the Paradise Beach a sparsely populated beautiful beach with safe swimming as used predominantly by locals with beach, sun loungers and shade and a cafe all available – modest entrance fee.
